by: Mal Alder

Social media is a great way for small business owners to engage with their customer base. You can utilize all your social platforms in a way that encourages customers to interact with your business. This can help you build a relationship with your audience eventually leading to increased sales, brand awareness, and growing your business.

Those all sound amazing, right? Here are a few small business social media tips to help encourage engagement on all your social platforms:

1. Post Engaging Content

Content is the most important thing when it comes to social media. What do your followers want to know about? What things are they interested in? Knowing the answers to these questions can help you create engaging content that helps boost your business. Don’t post for the sake of posting. Think of your audience and post content that they will find interesting or helpful.

Content Suggestions:

  • A memories post that asks the audience to recall a memory they made at the business
  • Fun facts/trivia that relates to the business’ industry
  • Customer testimonial
  • National holiday and how it relates to the business (Ex. A post that says, “Celebrating National Camping Day” for an RV Campground)
  • Tips that relate to the business’ industry

2. Include a Call-to-Action

Create a post with a call-to-action at the end encouraging them to like or comment on your post. One of the best small business social media tips is to include a call-to-action because people are actually more likely to do something if you ask them to. Who would have thought?

Some CTA Examples:

  • Asking a question
  • Telling them to like/comment on the post
  • Asking them to comment with an emoji
  • Asking for a testimonial/review
  • Asking them to share the post

3. Use Quality Images

Nothing catches the eye quite like a quality image! You should always try and use decent quality photos in your social posts. Not only does it draw people to your page, but it also shows them you care about the type of content you are producing. Whatever you do, don’t take random images from the internet! Instead, you can take the photos yourself or hire a photographer to capture them for you. You can even use your cellphone to capture a photo, just make sure it is an engaging image. Action shots work best. When users are scrolling through their feeds, they are more likely to stop on a post that includes an image versus just plain text.

4. Post Consistently

Consistency is key when you’re trying to build a solid following on social media. You should aim to post at least 3-5 times per week. If you post on a consistent basis, then your followers will know when to expect your content.

5. Respond to Comments

One of the best ways to interact with your social media following is by responding to their comments. It’s good to create a space where your followers want to interact with you and feel like they can do so. Responding to comments will show that you care about what your followers are saying and it’ll make them want to engage with your posts more and more.

6. Branded Groups

Starting a branded Facebook group is a great way to engage with your followers. You can use the groups feature to add members/followers to your group which allows you to create a community around your brand. These are people that love your business and want to engage with a community associated with your brand. Facebook’s algorithm favors branded group posts so it pushes it to the top of your follower’s newsfeed.
